Alex Simmons of IGN was given an opportunity to try out the hotly anticipated Red Dead Redemption 2, and among his impressions, he revealed that horses have been given a major overhaul to make them feel more like living, breathing animals. In the original game, they were simply a means to an end: some were better than others, not unlike a car or any other vehicle, and that was about it – whereas particular effort has been taken in the sequel to create a relationship between man and steed based on care and trust.
Per the article, “…Rockstar wants you to think of your horse as a companion rather than a disposable mode of transport, and as such you’ll build up a bond with your mount the more time you spend with it, calming it when it’s agitated, grooming it and feeding it. If you have a strong bond with your horse it’ll be generally be less skittish and calmer in firefights, and more inclined to do as you want, while an untrained horse is more unpredictable.”
“It’s evident a huge amount of work has gone into making the horses as lifelike as possible, from their mannerisms to how they’re animated. Different breeds have different personalities – they react differently to terrain, water and stressful situations – but all are beautifully brought to life.”
Simmons describes that the open world as a whole feels more like an organic and realistic environment, and these improvements to horse gameplay seem indicative of that: your actions have a consequence, and you will have to invest the time and energy to be able to reap the rewards.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is due to release on October 26, 2018 for PS4 and Xbox One.
